West LA beats Saddleback, San Bernardino Valley to open season at Alvin Hunter Classic

SAN BERNARDINO – The West Los Angeles College men's basketball team got its 2023-24 season started by picking up a pair of wins out of three games at the Alvin Hunter Classic tournament held at San Bernardino Valley College.

On Friday (Nov. 10), the No. 26 state-ranked Wildcats opened with a 60-53 win over No. 28 Saddleback College. CJ Hardy scored a game-high 27 points while Marland Harris had a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds.

West LA came back on Saturday and lost 103-92 to Moorpark College. Hardy had another solid game with 21 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks. Harris put up his second double-double with 11 points and 11 boards. Blake Lander had 14 points and Daniel Cooper scored 16 points off the bench.

The Wildcats wrapped up the weekend with a 78-62 victory over host and No. 23-ranked San Bernardino Valley. Hardy poured in a season-high 29 points and posted 8 rebounds as well as 5 assists. Harris nearly had a triple-double as he totaled 17 points, 12 rebounds, and 9 blocks. Bryce Wimbish contributed 9 points and 5 boards off the bench.

West LA, 2-1 overall, is back in action on Thursday (Nov. 16) when the Wildcats travel to Oxnard College for a 5 p.m. non-conference game.
