Canyons steals one from WEST LA, 65-61

Culver City, CA:
The West LA Women's basketball team seemed to have everything going their way early on 
as they faced College of the Canyons on the WLAC campus Saturday afternoon..Justice Walters
(Westchester HS) and Tricia Delph (Fairfax HS) both scored 5 points each to help WEST to an 18-14
lead after one quarter of play. The Wildcats held COC to just 20 percent from the three point line while forcing 4 Cougar turnovers.

The Wildcats took a nine point lead at 25-14, with 8:45 remaining in the 2nd on a CeCe Delph layup. West extended
the lead to six at the half, 35-29.WEST had four chances to score on one possession and came away unsuccessful.
This Cougars went on a 7-0 run before Taniya Simmons (University HS) made a pair of free throws to give West LA 
a 3 point lead.

In the fourth, Simmons blocked Malia Semana's 3 point attempt. However, Diamyn Davis picked up the rebound and scored on the
putback giving Canyons a 63-61 lead with 1:01 left in the game. Justice Walters missed a 3 point attempt with :40 seconds remaining and 
the Cougars took the rebound the other way. Eriana Gowdy (Westchester) forecd a turnover with :21 seconds left in the game and  
Head Coach Twan Herron called a timeout. As WEST ran their last play of the game, Delph was stripped causing Diana Gaitan (Northridge)
to foul. Canyons converted on their last two free throws to bring the final to 65-61, COC.

Taniya Simmons had another strong performance in her second consecutive outing. CeCe Delph led all scorers with 27 points and 14 rebounds,
after a 31 point 16 rebound performance at Bakersfield Wednesday night.Justice Walters finished with 12 points. Diana Gaitan
made her second start of the season and played a career high 34 minutes. The freshman guard finished with 5 points, 2 blocks, 1 steal, 1 assist  and 2 rebounds. Eriana Gowdy scored 7 points to go along with 6 rebounds, 3 assist and 4 steals.

The Wildcats return home Wednesday night to face conference rival Santa Monica College at WEST LA.
starting at 5 pm. The game is the traditional 'White Out" game with the first 50 paid fans receiving a white out tshirt.
The Men's game follow at 7:00 pm and the first 50 fans will also receive free t-shirts.
