Rally falls short for West LA women's basketball in season opener

The West Los Angeles College women's basketball team played its first official game on Friday since February of 2020. Some opening day jitters likely played a role in a 77-68 loss to Southwestern College at the Valley Invitational in San Bernardino.

West LA fell behind 7-2 early and trailed 26-11 after the first quarter. Down 49-31 at halftime, West LA outscored Southwestern 37-28 over the final two quarters but the early deficit was too much to overcome.

Sophomore Diamond Williams had a big game for West LA in her 2021-22 season debut. She had one of two West LA double-doubles in the contest, o=posting 20 points and 11 rebounds. Williams also dished out 4 assists and had a pair of blocks.

Angel Morris played well off the bench, totaling a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Lauren Lee and Diana Gaitan both chipped in with 10 points each.

West LA returns to tourney action on Saturday (Nov. 6) when it faces MiraCosta College at 1 p.m.
